Drake Casually Breaks A Bunch of Records In a Week

Drake’s newest album More Life has been on a record smashing roll since its release last week. Not only did he break the previous Spotify records for the most streamed album in a day, and most streamed artist in a day(both recently set by Ed Sheeran), but he broke two Billboard records as well.

Drake now holds the title for the most hits on the Billboard Hot 100, passing the previous record holder and friend Lil Wayne. With his new album More Life, which is sitting happily at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, all 22 tracks plus 2 others of Drake’s combine to also break his previous record for the most simultaneous entries on the Hot 100 with 24 tracks.

All of this within the same month that Nicki Minaj broke the record for most entries among women.

Drake recently said that he wanted to be seen as more than a rapper, and rather a “pop star like Michael Jackson.” I think with Drake’s vision, drive, and general likability, he’s on his way. There hasn’t been anyone else like him whose been able to accomplish so much in such a short amount of time, especially while being so young. With Drake as a driving force, the future of music looks bright.

Ed Sheeran Credits TLC to His Current #1 “Shape of You” After Being Accused of Copyright Infringement(Again)

Ed Sheeran has been accused of copying the melodies of other artists at least three times now. Clearly there is a trend occurring, but whats funny is that I definitely heard “Cheap Thrills” by Sia the first time I heard “Shape Of You.” But apparently its closer to another huge hit, TLC’s “No Scrubs.”

The argument is over the similarities between the pre-chorus of Sheeran’s current hit, and the chorus of the 90’s R&B classic. The words are definitely different, but the melody and rhythm similarities are undeniable:

“Girl, you know I want your love/ your love was handmade for somebody like me” is way too damn similar to “No, I don’t want no scrubs/ a scrub is a guy who can’t get no love from me.”

“No Scrubs” was also a Hot 100 number one in 1999, so in my opinion it takes away from the authenticity of Sheeran’s number one because the content is undeniably unoriginal.

Come on Ed, I’d like to think you can do better as a songwriter, but I’m beginning to lose faith.

Don’t believe it? Listen for yourself:

Nicki Minaj Finally Breaks the Record for Female Entries on the Hot 100!

Nicki Minaj has finally surpassed Aretha Franklin’s record of 73 entries as a female on the Billboard Hot 100 this past week with her three newest tracks on the chart, including “No Frauds” with Drake and Lil Wayne.

The record for most appearances by a female on the Hot 100 now stands at 76, and I’m assuming that number will continue to rise with expected releases from Minaj in both the near and distant future. However, it’s probably important to note that throughout all 76 of her entries on the famous chart, Nicki has never notched a number one. Will she ever accomplish this feat that seems so much simpler to achieve than the record she just broke?

Regardless, its amazing what the Queen of Rap has done for the music industry in her relatively short career, and her impact is undeniable. She’s definitely just getting started.

In third place for most female entries on the Hot 100 sits Taylor Swift comfortably, and I’m predicting that her and Nicki are going to go back and forth with this record over the next few years, which if nothing else may make for some exciting headlines.

Congrats Nicki!

Another Day, Another Record(or two) Broken by Rihanna

I could be delusional, but I feel like there have been so many Hot 100 records broken lately, and with so many artists within record-breaking territory(Nicki, Taylor), there’s a high probability that its going to keep happening– which is awesome!

However, the 29 year-old queen of Barbados and record-smashing goddess that is Rihanna surpassed Elvis Presley this week to become the artist with the 5th most Hot 100 top fives of ALL time with “Love On The Brain!”

BUT, she also became the third act in history behind The Beatles and Madonna to have over 30 Hot 100 top tens with the same song!

I just have to reiterate on the fact that Rih is 29 years old, and in that time she has released eight extremely profitable albums that have had a huge influence on radio worldwide. Realistically speaking, most artists would have burned out by now or been turned away by radio DJ’s as we’ve witnessed with Mariah, Britney, etc. But, after watching her artistic visions come to life in Anti(my favorite contemporary album of 2016) its safe to say that we are just watching her get started. Congrats to Rihanna on an amazing career so far, and as a huge fan and admirer-er, I can’t wait to see what you do next!

Ed Sheeran Debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200 Chart with ÷

After a full first week of sales, Ed Sheeran has not only topped the Billboard 200 albums chart for the second time in his career, but his LP had the largest sales opening of the year so far! Divide sold 451,000 equivalent units(pure sales + streams) in the United states, and has been dominating the charts across the pond as well. As of the time of my writing this Ed’s “Shape of You” is also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart where he’s ruled for a total of six weeks and it doesn’t seem like he’ll be sacrificing that position any time soon.

I think its safe to say that at least for now its Ed’s world and we’re all just living in it!
